# Île-de-France

**Île-de-France** is the most populous and most densely populated region of metropolitan France. Centred on Paris, it concentrates nearly one fifth of the French population on barely 2% of the national territory.

Paris, the national capital, is also the economic, political and cultural heart of the region and one of the world's leading hubs for tourism, fashion, finance and gastronomy.

## Heritage

The Palace of Versailles, Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, the Palace of Fontainebleau and the Basilica of Saint-Denis are among the many UNESCO World Heritage sites located within the regional territory.
